Captain Moroni, the cleric; Nephi, the paladin; Nephi II, the ranger; Helaman, the fighter; King Noah K, the rogue; and King Noah H, the bard, all met with a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker, in the city of Neverwinter. Gundren asked each adventurer to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay everyone ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of the party on horse, along with a warrior escort name Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
The party has spent the last few days following the high road south from Neverwinter, and they’d just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. They encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
The wagon of provisions was pulled by two oxen. It was packed full of an assortment of mining supplies and food. This included a dozen sacks of flour, shovels, picks, and crowbars (about a dozen each), and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil (about fifty flasks in volume). The total value of the cargo is 100 gp. Helaman and Captain Moroni drove the wagon of provisions, with Moroni holding the reigns. King Noah K lazily rode on the back of the wagon while Nephi II traveled on foot, behind the wagon. Nephi and King Noah H both traveled on foot, with King Noah H on the right and Nephi on the left.
The party traveled on the Triboar Trail for about half a day when they came around a bend and spotted two dead horses, sprawled about fifty feet ahead of them. The woods pressed close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side. The path was blocked. As the wagon came to a halt, Helaman leaped from the wagon seat and began pulling arrows from the dead horses. In that instant 4 goblins jumped from the bushes, 2 on either side of the wagon, and began attacking the team. Due to their experience with the area, no one was surprised by the ambush.
The moment the 4 goblins jumped from the bushes the party split into two smaller groups. Helaman, as well as Kings Noah H and Noah K charged after the 2 goblins on the right of the caravan. While Moroni, and the two Nephi’s charged to the left.
Helaman was the first to be attacked by the goblins. Unfortunately he was not wearing his armor, or had any of his weapons ready at the time. The goblin swung at Helaman striking him hard in the chest, nearly killing him. The second goblin attacked King Noah H. While the goblin charged King Noah K screams “I’ll protect you Noah H!” This shout startled the goblin and he missed Noah H by a foot. Saving Noah H’s life. The force of the the goblin’s swing threw it to the ground. Noah H exhaled a cloud of poison in retaliation toward the goblin slowing it down and sending it in a coughing fit. King Noah K swung both short swords at the goblin nearest Helaman and easily decapitated the creature. Helaman was able to recover enough to use his crossbow. The bolt pierced the goblin’s chest. and quickly exited it’s back. The goblin coughed with a gargle of blood, and fell to the ground, lifeless.
On the left, Captain Moroni is attacked by a goblin, hitting him in the torso, causing a scratch to appear in his armor, but he was not affected by the attack. Moroni to the moment he was given and cast a spell of Cure Wounds on Helaman, healing his wound instantly. The second goblin decides to attack the paladin, named Nephi. The goblin quickly realized the error of it’s decision as a loud “Clank” was heard as his weapon connected with Nephi’s breast plate, and seeing that he was not affected by the attack. Nephi made a quick swipe with his sword and removed it’s head from it’s shoulders. The goblin was dead instantly. Nephi II threw his spear at the second goblin and missed him by inches. This got the goblin’s attention. It screamed in rage and ran after Nephi II. The goblin was a clumsy one, because it quickly tripped on his own foot, smacking it’s face on the path and bloodying it’s nose. Nephi came to the rescue, using his Javelin. Quickly throwing his weapon he struck it in the thigh. Crippling it, but leaving it capable of attacking those around him. Captain Maroni swung his mace wildly, striking the goblin in his arm. The force of the strike threw the goblin into a rock. There was a sickening crunch as it’s head smacked the rock. The force of the blow killed the goblin.
With the ambush a failure, the party decided to investigate the are to find out what happened to the ridders of the dead horses, and where the goblins came from. King Noah H searched the area around the ambush and found evidence that the goblins have been coming from another location recently. Nephi searched the goblins for gold and items, but found no pockets to loot. Captain Moroni investigated the dead horses and found that the horses belonged to Gundren Rockseeker, their employer, and his companion. It is clear that the arrows killed the horses, but no evidence of the riders was found near by. Nephi II found that the saddle bag was looted and that nearby there was an empty map case. Helaman investigated the map case and found evidence that dozens of goblins were using a hidden trail on the north side of the road. Captain Moroni found evidence of 2 human sized bodies being drug by goblins up the warn path to the north.
The party decided to follow the hidden trail
